Devious Maids With Latina Power and Talent

A few weeks ago, I attended the Devious Maids screening in South Beach. From the moment I started watching it, I got lost in the entertainment of the show and honestly, it made me laugh. I thought it was a fun and sassy show.

I had read some controversial stories prior to the event about why another “maid” story. Yes, it could have been called Devious Lawyers, but the twist in the show is that the characters are not portrayed as submissive and dumb. If anything, they appear smarter than the gringo characters.

I applaud the talent of the five Latinas played by Roselyn Sanchez (Without a Trace, Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty), Dania Ramirez (Entourage) , Judy Reyes (Scrubs) and Edy Ganem (Livin Loud).

I also can understand the perspective of what some bloggers have written based on their own personal stories. But I do believe since the show is now live and there are 5 Latinas in a major television network like Lifetime, we should support them. At the end of the day, if I thought the show was bad, Latina or non Latina cast, I wouldn’t watch it.

After the show, there was a Q & A with Roselyn and Dania. Natalia Cruz, Moderator of Q&A session, Univision Investigative Journalist, Host of Primer Impacto Weekend Edition. A person from the audience asked about the controversy. Check out the video of what they had to say:

I agree with what Eva Longoria said in this Huffington post article:

Devious Maids is a show that centers on five (count ’em), five Latinas who are bonded together by their jobs, their ambitions, their dreams and their life struggles. The five women are maids by occupation only; it is what they do, not who they are.

Also present during the screening were:
* José José, legendary singer
* David Damian, VP of Strategic Development and Communications, MALDEF
* Thomas Saenz, President and General Counsel, MALDEF

So I say, let’s support them so the show can continue to be aired in several seasons and hopefully on to bigger, newer and more opportunities for them and other Latinas on the big screen.

Disclosure: I attended the screening for free. It was an open invite and I was not paid to do this post. All opinions are mine and authentic.
