Today I witnessed the first ever Google +1 hangout with key leaders of Latino organizations encouraging Latino’s to get out and vote, make a difference and to help others get informed about the tools and information that is on these organizations websites.
This event was organized by Elianne Ramos, the Co-Chair of Latism.org, the largest Hispanic online voice and was the first of its kind. The leaders of the various non-profits who are actively involved in supporting and informing the Latino voice is very powerful:
Clarisssa Martinez de Castro, Director of Immigation and National Campaigns for NCLR
Arturo Vargas, Executive Director, NALEO (Latino Elected and Appointed Officials)
Participants were encouraged to ask questions thru Twitter utilizing the Twitter hashtag #latism. Elianne Ramos was monitoring the tweets and asking questions to the panel on the Google Hangout. Additionally, the participating organizations were tweeting while the hang out was Live. One great insight that Elianne mentioned was that those that have the technical tools and resources should share the information to those that don’t have it available. We sometimes forget that not everyone is 24/7 in this online form of communication.
After the hangout, some conversations were thrown out in fun that @ergeekgoddess AKA as Elianne Ramos shoud run for President. Hey, you never know! Didn’t Obama get voted because of his grassroots efforts in Social Media? How do you know that the next President of the United States cannot be a Latina woman!;)
Ok, all joking aside, this Google hangout has made me more informed, more motivated to learn about what all the information these organizations are providing, wanting to subscribe to them, share their resources with those that do not have access and most of all be prepared when I go out and vote. We can make a difference! Si se puede!
