Definition of God by Rob Bell, Elizabeth Gilbert & Iyanla Vanzant

This video answers questions to three Trailblazers at the event of how they define God: Rob Bell, Elizabeth Gilbert and Iyanla Vanzant.

Rob Bell says that God is like a song and you hear it, but it is in a room where he has to get in. And the more closely you listen, you realize the song is playing in the whole house. And you want to turn up the volume in the whole house because it makes your soul soar. For him, it begins in the little every day moments and that spirituality is the awareness that there is more going on. He goes on to say that the moment you prove something, then it is wrong. You have to experience it to be real.

Iyanla defines God as all there is. She says she never lost it but being aware of it that was the issue.

Elizabeth Gilbert says that God is anything that lifts your face off the dirt. The dirt is anything that you get stuck in and keeps you broken, bent and diminished. God’s spirit is what takes you out of the mud.

I define God like a nurturing wise mother. At different times in my life, I rebelled like a child wanting to find my own way. Now, I know that after going through all those twists and turns, God’s way is easier, because he/she can guide me in a clearer path. Many times, my mind has gotten the best of me and my choices led me to painful situations. I suppose I had to learn those lessons, but as I age gracefully, I know that making better choices frees me from unnecessary dramas. Now, I feel God similar to being wrapped in the love of a mother and simply surrendering to that love.
